Nagaon: In a strong show of public dissent, a sit-in protest was organized by the Nagaon Nagarik Sabha on Saturday afternoon near Jubin Tower, adjacent to Nagaon University, condemning alleged threats to the media and the recent attack on the Asomiya Pratidin office in Lakhimpur (Nagaon Sit-in Protest).

The protest, held at around 1:30 PM, witnessed the participation of a large number of citizens, activists, and political figures. The programme was conducted by Birinchi Bora, Secretary of the Nagaon Nagarik Sabha.

Addressing the gathering, Sabha President Amarendra Sharma strongly criticized Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, alleging that his remarks and actions have created an atmosphere of fear and intimidation against the media. He condemned both the alleged threats and the attack on the Asomiya Pratidin group, calling them serious concerns for democracy.

Speakers at the protest raised various allegations and criticisms regarding governance, law enforcement, and media freedom. Birinchi Bora accused the Chief Minister of reacting aggressively to media reports and questioned the role of the police, alleging misuse of authority.

Senior leader Moolan Laskar, founder president of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti and CPI leader, termed the present regime as one of the worst in Assam’s history. Uddipta Narayan Raja, a state executive member of Asom Jatiya Parishad, claimed that the people had already expressed their discontent. Meanwhile, former academic Wahidud Zaman highlighted concerns over electoral processes and uncertainties surrounding results.

Several prominent individuals, including Congress leader Mrinal Hazarika, Dhruvajyoti Bora, MOSA President Ashiq Rabbani, Secretary Safiqul Hussain, Jatiya Yuva Shakti district secretary Snigdha Saikia, Kabir Hussain, and student leader Jit Das, among others, took part in the demonstration.

The protest concluded with participants raising slogans against the government and in defense of press freedom, echoing calls for accountability and protection of democratic values.

Notably, during the programme, senior journalist Mulan Laskar symbolically named the protest venue as “Motiram Bora Democratic Field,” underscoring its significance as a space for public voice and democratic expression.
