Safiqur Rahman, Nagaon: In a heartfelt and culturally rich event, the Nagaon Zila Asomiya Sahitya Sanmilani organized a memorial programme in honour of its former president, Late Suren Kumar Bora, along with a prestigious award distribution ceremony at the Khagarijan College auditorium on Saturday (Suren Kumar Bora Memorial Award Nagaon).
The programme was presided over by Dr. Risheshwar Thengal Saikia, President of the Nagaon district unit of the Sanmilani, while the event was formally inaugurated by Dr. Ramesh Nath, Principal of Khagarijan College. The event began with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp before the portrait of Late Suren Kumar Bora, followed by floral tributes in his memory.
The event opened on a soulful note with a Borgeet performance by Nirmali Hazarika, setting a reflective and reverent tone for the gathering. As a mark of deep respect and remembrance, the family members of the late literary figure—Dipti Bora and his daughter Prashanti Bora—presented the Suren Bora Memorial Award to noted academician and former Gauhati University professor, Dr. Mukul Chakravarty. The award included traditional Assamese honours such as Cheleng, Gamosa, Xorai, Jaapi, along with a cash prize.
The programme, eloquently anchored by district secretary Nijora Saikia, featured emotional recollections and reflections on the life and literary contributions of Late Bora. The award recipient Dr. Mukul Chakravarty, family members Dipti Bora and Prashanti Bora, and social worker Puniram Saikia shared their memories and paid glowing tributes.
Following the memorial ceremony, the event transformed into a vibrant literary gathering, where more than twenty poets—including Guru Bachan Singh, Anima Bora, Kishore Das, Ashok Ram Bhattacharya, Mamoni Sharma Bhattacharya, Dulumoni Goswami Sharma, Indira Goswami Bhattacharya, Gunakanta Sharma, and Deepa Saikia—recited poems from Bora’s published works, breathing life into his timeless literary legacy.
The programme stood as a powerful tribute to Late Suren Kumar Bora, celebrating his enduring contributions to Assamese literature and inspiring a renewed commitment to cultural and literary pursuits.
