Nagaon: Although ministers and legislators of the ruling BJP government claim that significant road infrastructure development has taken place, the reality in many areas presents a contrasting picture. A massive pothole resembling a pond at the three-road junction near Baligaon Mosque — located just beyond Dakshinpat Chariali — on the busy Bebejia–Dakshinpat–Barkola–Kampur road in Nagaon district (Bebejia Dakshinpat Barkola Road), has been causing immense hardship to pedestrians and local residents alike.
In effect, this stretch of the road has turned into a death trap. Notably, the road serves as a shorter and more convenient route connecting Bebejia with Dakshinpat, Barkola, Kampur, Kochua and Baithalangso. The numerous potholes that have developed between Dakshinpat and Barkola have already caused several accidents. The road witnesses heavy traffic from morning until late at night and is one of the important routes for commuting to Nagaon town. Students, teachers, government employees and workers travelling to schools, colleges and various offices in the town depend on this road daily.
It is worth mentioning that while the road earlier fell under the Nagaon Sadar Legislative Assembly constituency, it now comes under the Raha Legislative Assembly constituency following constituency delimitation. Several important institutions and heritage sites are located along this route, including Guru Nanak College, Barkola Higher Secondary School, Kalika Than, the historic Baidya Pukhuri and Mikir Pukhuri dating back to the Ahom era, as well as the central Gurdwara of the Sikh community in Barkola and several other Gurdwaras. Due to the deteriorated condition of the road, particularly the affected stretch, several motorcyclists and cyclists have met with accidents there in recent times. Despite the situation, the Public Works Department has not taken any measures to repair the road.
Pratap Singh, Principal of Barkola Higher Secondary School, stated that students, teachers and staff use this road daily to commute to the school, making repairs urgently necessary. Senior teacher Chandra Mohan Sharma also demanded the repair and upgradation of the road. Various residents of Barkola have urged Raha MLA Shashikanta Das to take necessary steps to ensure proper repair of the road at the earliest.
