Sports Desk : Assam’s specially-abled athletes once again brought glory to the state by delivering an outstanding performance at the 26th Junior & Sub-Junior National Para Swimming Championship 2026, held in Bengaluru (Assam Para Swimming Championship 2026).
The Assam Para Swimming team achieved remarkable success at the national event, winning a total of seven medals — five gold, one silver, and one bronze. The championship was held from June 8 to June 10 at the G Swimming Academy in Bengaluru.

Three Rising Stars Lead Assam’s Medal Haul

The historic achievement was made possible by three exceptionally talented para swimmers — Surja Saikia, Yesmina Khatun and Narjima Khatun. Their impressive performances once again highlighted Assam’s growing strength in para sports on the national stage. Overcoming physical challenges and fierce competition, the athletes displayed extraordinary determination, dedication and skill.
Individual Performances

Surja Saikia: Competing in the Sub-Junior Boys S-10 category, Surja won three gold medals in the 100m Freestyle, 50m Breaststroke and 100m Breaststroke events.
Yesmina Khatun: Participating in the Junior Girls S-10 category, Yesmina secured two gold medals and one silver medal. She won gold in the 50m Breaststroke and 100m Breaststroke events and claimed silver in the 100m Freestyle.

Narjima Khatun: Competing in the Junior Girls S-10 category, Narjima brought home a bronze medal for Assam in the 50m Freestyle event.

Inspiration from Riniki Bhuyan Sharma and Strong Leadership of Rajiv Dey
The team’s remarkable success was backed by the continuous encouragement, patronage and support of Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, noted social worker and entrepreneur, who serves as the Chief Patron of the Paralympic Association of Assam.
Equally important was the contribution of Rajiv Dey, coach of the team and General Secretary of the association, whose guidance and leadership helped the athletes deliver their best performances at the national level.

Opportunity for Asian Para Games Selection

Organised by the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI), this championship was not only a national competition but also served as a selection trial for the Indian team for the 2026 Asian Para Games. The outstanding performances of Assam’s swimmers have significantly enhanced their prospects of representing India at the international level in the future.

The unprecedented success of Assam’s young para swimmers in this highly competitive championship has filled the people of the state with pride and joy.
