Nagaon: With hope in his heart, courage in his chest, and dreams shining in his eyes, Jonorup Saikia from Nagaon district has scripted an inspiring story of determination and resilience. Overcoming severe physical challenges, the young student has successfully cleared the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examination with an impressive 70%, proving that unwavering dedication can triumph over any obstacle (Differently-Abled Student Success).
Hailing from Chalchali in Puranigudam, Jonorup is the second son of Bolindra Saikia and Rupali Saikia. Born with physical disabilities, his journey has been anything but easy. Yet, his strong willpower and relentless pursuit of education have made him a symbol of hope and inspiration.
Despite being unable to attend school regularly due to mobility challenges, Jonorup never allowed his circumstances to define his limits. He studied mostly from home, often sitting on his bed for long hours. At times, his father would take him to school by vehicle, while earlier, his mother would carry him in her arms. Even in the classroom, he required a special chair to continue his studies.
Speaking about his journey, Jonorup shared that he used to study for four to five hours daily despite physical discomfort and limitations.
“I am very happy with my result. Studying was not easy for me, but I kept trying,” he said, reflecting his quiet determination.
Beyond academics, Jonorup has a deep love for poetry. He often writes verses inspired by his life struggles, dreams, and aspirations. His ultimate goal is to become a college teacher—and perhaps even a principal one day—showing that his ambitions soar far beyond his present limitations.
His success has brought immense joy to his family, though the journey has also been emotional. His mother, Rupali Saikia, became visibly emotional while recounting the struggles and sacrifices behind her son’s achievement. She shared that both her sons are differently-abled, yet they continue to strive for a better future.
“Our younger son Jonorup has shown interest in studies since childhood, and we have guided him as much as possible. His father, being a teacher, has also supported him greatly. We don’t know if we can fulfill all his dreams, but we are trying our best,” she said.
She also mentioned that her elder son, Darpan Saikia, has completed his polytechnic education and is currently pursuing a graduate degree. Despite moments of anxiety about their children’s future, the family remains determined not to lose hope.
“We want them to become independent and stand on their own feet,” she added.
The family has also received continuous encouragement from social worker Durlav Pawan Barua, associated with the Sarva Shiksha Mission in the Rupahi Educational Block. He has been supporting the family since 2005 and praised the parents for their relentless efforts in ensuring their children’s education and well-being.
Empowerment Through Government Support & Constitutional Rights
Jonorup’s story also highlights the importance of inclusive education and the role of government support systems in empowering differently-abled individuals.
India has several welfare schemes and constitutional provisions aimed at ensuring equal opportunities:
- The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 ensures equality, non-discrimination, and full participation in society, including access to education.
- Article 21A of the Indian Constitution guarantees the right to free and compulsory education for children aged 6 to 14.
- Article 41 directs the State to provide public assistance in cases of disability, ensuring education and employment opportunities.
- Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) promotes inclusive education by providing special facilities, assistive devices, and home-based learning support for children with disabilities.
- Accessible India Campaign (Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan) aims to create a barrier-free environment in schools and public institutions.
- Scholarships for students with disabilities further encourage academic growth and reduce financial burdens.
These initiatives play a crucial role in enabling students like Jonorup to pursue their dreams despite physical challenges.
