Seat Distribution by Division

Bangladesh has 300 parliamentary constituencies across eight divisions. Although the total number of seats in Parliament is 350, fifty are reserved for women and are nominated or indirectly elected members.

In Dhaka Division’s 70 constituencies, the BNP alliance won 54 seats, while the Jamaat-e-Islami alliance won 12.

In Rajshahi Division’s 39 constituencies, the BNP alliance secured 27 seats, and the Jamaat-e-Islami alliance won 11.

Tarique Rahman Wins Two Constituencies

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson and prime ministerial candidate Tarique Rahman has unofficially won two key constituencies—Dhaka-17 and Bogura-6—in the 13th parliamentary elections. This victory is considered highly significant as it marks his political comeback after 17 years away from Bangladesh.

With the BNP securing an absolute majority as per the results declared today (February 12 and 13), the party is set to form the government. It may be recalled that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was removed from office following protests in August 2024. Currently, an interim government led by Muhammad Yunus is in charge of the country.

With the announcement of the results, it is now almost certain that Tarique Rahman, the son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and head of the BNP, will become the next Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Notably, the Awami League did not participate in this election, leading to a direct contest between the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami.

Congratulations from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated BNP leader Tarique Rahman on his party’s victory. In a post on his X handle, Prime Minister Modi wrote, “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Tarique Rahman for leading the BNP to victory in Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections. This victory reflects the trust the people of Bangladesh have placed in your leadership.”

He further stated, “India will always stand in support of a democratic and progressive Bangladesh. I look forward to working together with you to further strengthen our multifaceted relationship and advance our shared development goals.”

Call for Prayers Instead of Victory Processions

BNP chief Tarique Rahman has directed party workers to organize special prayers across the country after Friday prayers instead of holding victory processions.

Only Hindu Candidate to Win

The only Hindu candidate to win in the Bangladesh parliamentary elections is Gyaneshwar Chandra Roy. He won from the Dhaka-3 constituency as a BNP candidate, defeating Jamaat-e-Islami’s Mohammad Shahinur Islam. Roy secured 98,785 votes, while Shahinur Islam received 82,232 votes.

Meanwhile, in the Khulna-1 constituency, Jamaat-e-Islami’s only Hindu candidate, Krishna Nandi, was defeated by BNP’s Amir Iyar Khan. Khan secured 121,352 votes, while Nandi received 70,346 votes.
