Nagaon: Dr. Jagannath Biswakarma, (Dr. Jagannath Biswakarma Senior Scientist) an eminent environmental scientist from Nagaon, Assam, has taken up a new role as a Senior Science Officer in the Civil Service, working on environment and water resources at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), England .

Over the past two decades, Dr. Biswakarma has been conducting research in environmental science and water resources across India, Japan, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. He has been associated with globally renowned institutions such as ETH Zurich, Eawag, the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF), Grenoble, and the University of Bristol. In India, he also serves as a visiting professor at IIT Hyderabad and is involved in several research projects with universities in Assam.

His research primarily focuses on water pollution and treatment, agriculture and irrigation, and the recovery of critical metals and minerals from contaminated water and soils in mining regions.

In particular, he has been conducting research on how toxic substances such as arsenic spread in groundwater and affect human health across the world. This work holds significant importance for addressing clean water and public health challenges in many parts of Southeast Asia.

Apart from research, Dr. Biswakarma has been actively involved in international scientific collaboration and environmental policy discussions. Under his leadership, ICMGP 2026, an international conference supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Minamata Convention on Mercury, will be held in India for the first time.

Speaking about his appointment as Senior Science Officer in the UK government, Dr. Biswakarma said that he wishes to continue working towards building stronger connections between science-based research and real-world societal challenges.

According to him, many students in Assam possess immense potential to excel in science and research. What they need most are proper opportunities, guidance, and perseverance.

For this achievement, he expressed heartfelt gratitude to his mother Arpana Bora Biswakarma and father Lakhan Dev Biswakarma for their sacrifices, and also remembered with respect his brother Tripurari Biswakarma, family members, friends, and teachers for their support, encouragement, and guidance throughout his journey.

Dr. Biswakarma is a life member of the Asam Sahitya Sabha and serves as the Executive President of the Prabasi Asomiya Sub-Committee of the Nagaon District Sahitya Sabha. Congratulating him on this achievement abroad, Dr. Sarat Barkotoki, President of the Nagaon District Sahitya Sabha, and Rajib Kumar Hazarika, its Secretary, described the accomplishment as a matter of great pride for Assam.
