Safiqur Rahman : As the vibrant festival of Bohag Bihu approaches, bringing with it the melodies of the dhol, pepa, and the enchanting calls of the cuckoo and nightingale, the Nagaon Zila Sahitya Sabha is set to celebrate the essence of Assamese culture through a special literary initiative (Bihu Songs in Assamese Literary Tradition).
In a bid to highlight the richness of Bihu songs in Assamese literature, the Prabasi Axomiya Sub-Committee of the Sabha will organize an online discussion titled “Bihu Songs in Assamese Literary Tradition” on March 28 at 7:00 PM (IST), corresponding to 1:30 PM in England.
Bohag Bihu, often described as the lifeblood of Assamese identity, finds an expansive and expressive presence in Assamese songs and literature. Traditional Bihu geet are deeply rooted in the state’s history, aesthetics, and emotional expression, enriched with rhythm, poetic devices, and cultural symbolism.
The upcoming event will witness the participation of distinguished guests from the United Kingdom, including Nirala Barua, Vice President of the UK Asam Sahitya Sabha from Scotland, and Manjira Goswami Choudhury, former President of the UK Asam Sahitya Sabha from England. Their presence is expected to add depth and global perspective to the discussion.
The session will be moderated by Dr. Jagannath Biswakarma, Executive President of the Prabasi Axomiya Sub-Committee, representing the Nagaon Zila Sahitya Sabha.
Adding further significance, the speeches presented during the session will be compiled and published in an e-newsletter titled “Through the Pen of the Diaspora.” The organizers have also invited creative write-ups on Bihu from members of the Assamese diaspora, with submissions open until March 31, 2026.
The event will be held in a hybrid format—online and in Nagaon—ensuring wider participation. Interested individuals can join via Google Meet.
The organizers have extended a warm invitation to all, expressing confidence that active participation will make the programme more meaningful and impactful.
