Nagaon: After assuming office for its second term, the government led by Himanta Biswa Sarma has taken a strict stance against corruption. While several officials have already come under the scanner of anti-corruption agencies, a senior doctor in Nagaon has now been arrested following the efforts of District Commissioner Debasish Sharma and Superintendent of Police Partha Pratim Das (Post-Mortem Bribery Case).
Nagaon Police have arrested senior doctor Manoj Kumar Sinha on allegations of accepting a bribe from the family of a deceased person in connection with a post-mortem examination. The accused is a professor and senior doctor at Nagaon Medical College.
The district administration reportedly received a complaint along with video footage alleging that Dr. Sinha had accepted money in exchange for providing or altering a post-mortem report. Following the complaint, District Commissioner Debasish Sharma ordered an inquiry into the matter.
According to reports, Dr. Sinha is accused of demanding money in connection with post-mortem reports and allegedly manipulating the findings in return for payment. Police sources indicate that several other senior officials of the medical college may also be questioned as part of the investigation.
The matter came to light after a victim lodged a complaint with the District Commissioner. Following an inquiry, police arrested the senior doctor. It has been alleged that money was demanded from the parents who lost their only son in an accident. The district administration reportedly recorded the transaction using a hidden camera as part of the investigation.
Speaking on the matter, District Commissioner Debasish Sharma said
“I say this with great sadness that we had to arrest one of our senior doctors, Manoj Kumar Sinha. Various complaints had been received against him over the past three months. Parents who have lost their child in an accident are already grieving, and at such a time a doctor demands money in the name of a post-mortem report. What kind of inhuman person must he be! If the victims paid him, he would give a report that helped them claim insurance money — if not, he would not.”
The District Commissioner further stated that a case has been registered against the accused doctor through Additional District Commissioner Kamaljit Sharma. He also said that due action would be taken against any broker network operating within the hospital.
