Police investigation after Hindu businessman killed in Gazipur BangladeshPolice probe underway after a Hindu businessman was beaten to death in Gazipur district of Bangladesh

Dhaka: A Hindu businessman was allegedly beaten to death in Bangladesh’s Gazipur district after a dispute over bananas, with police detaining three members of a family in connection with the incident, according to local media reports.

The incident took place on Saturday in the Kaliganj area of Gazipur. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the killing is linked to the recent incidents of violence against members of the Hindu community reported from different parts of Bangladesh.

The victim has been identified as Liton Chandra Ghosh (55), owner of Baishakhi Sweetmeat and Hotel. The Daily Star quoted police officials as saying that three suspects — Swapan Mia (55), his wife Majeda Khatun (45), and their son Masum Mia (28) — have been detained for their alleged role in the assault.

According to police, Masum owns a banana plantation in the area and had reported a bunch of bananas missing. While searching, he allegedly spotted the bananas at Liton’s hotel, which led to a heated argument between the two sides.

Police said the confrontation escalated when the accused allegedly punched and kicked Liton, causing him to collapse and die on the spot.

Family members of the deceased told police that Masum arrived at the hotel around 11:00 am, where he initially argued with a hotel employee over a minor issue. Later, his parents also reached the spot, and the dispute intensified into a physical fight.

Police officials said a detailed investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events, and further legal action will be taken based on the findings.
