Nagaon: A new chapter began in the sports history of Nagaon district today, Saturday (January 24, 2026). The Nagaon District Para Sports Association, under the Paralympic Association of Assam, has been formally constituted. On this occasion, a General Body Meeting was held at DRT Hall, Khutikatia, Nagaon.

Importance of the Paralympic Association of Assam

It is noteworthy that the Paralympic Association of Assam is affiliated with the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) and recognized by the Sports & Youth Welfare Department, Government of Assam. Established in 1992, PCI carries the important responsibility of selecting and sending Indian athletes to the Paralympic Games and other international para-sports competitions.

Objective of the Nagaon District Para Sports Association: A Commitment to Take Divyang Talent to the Global Stage

Today’s meeting was held under the initiative and guidance of Mrs. Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, Chief Patron of the Paralympic Association of Assam. The meeting was attended by Chandan Baruah, President, Rajib Dey, General Secretary, Joint Secretary Geet Gunjan Deka, along with several other state-level office bearers. It is hoped that the new committee will play a major role in advancing para-athletes of the district.

Speaking about the formation of the new committee, Rajib Dey, General Secretary of the Paralympic Association of Assam, said:

“Earlier, there was no district para sports body in Nagaon. Therefore, to promote para-sports in the district, we held meetings with sports activists and experts and formally formed this Nagaon District Para Sports Association. I am hopeful that this new committee will efficiently lead the association in the coming year.”

Welcoming the new office bearers, Chandan Baruah, President of the Paralympic Association of Assam, said:

“I hope that in the coming days, many talented athletes will emerge from Nagaon district through the initiatives of the district committee. The district as well as the entire state will feel proud of these specially-abled sportspersons.”

Commitment of the New President

The newly elected President of the Nagaon District Committee and sports activist Amitabh Bora expressed special gratitude to Mrs. Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, Chief Patron. He said:

“It is due to the continuous efforts and guidance of Chief Patron Mrs. Riniki Bhuyan Sharma that the formation of the Nagaon District Para Sports Association became possible today. We will identify specially-abled boys and girls from every corner of the district and provide proper training. We are determined to take them to the state, national, and international levels.”

Social worker and sports activist Abhijit Nath also shared his views, saying:

“We have long been associated with the sports field and have worked to bring forward talented athletes from the district. However, we were somewhat behind in working for specially-abled children. Now that gap will be filled. I am hopeful that with the formation of the Nagaon District Para Sports Association, we will be able to provide a proper platform to these specially-abled children, through which they can showcase their talent and bring glory to the district and the state.”

In the newly formed committee, Abhijit Nath has taken responsibility as Advisor, while Amitabh Bora has been elected President and Durlav Paban Baruah as Secretary. Other key office bearers include Joon Rajkhowa (Treasurer), Vice Presidents Shyamanta Das and Rita Baidya Kakoti, Joint Secretaries Ajay Sharma, Rishabh Jajodia, and Pratyush Pratim Bora, and Manoj Laskar as Public Relations Officer. Additionally, Jun Moni Das, Bankima Chakraborty, and Anand Surana have been included as Executive Members, forming the district committee.

The meeting also held detailed discussions on organizing para-sports competitions, training camps, and athlete selection processes in the district in the coming days.

Members present expressed that this initiative will mark a new direction in the development of para-sports in Nagaon district.
