Guwahati: The unusual death case of a towering figure of Assam’s cultural world, Zubeen Garg, has now triggered intense reactions in the state’s political and social circles over the slow pace of the judicial process. In particular, the Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) has strongly criticized the government over the entire issue (Zubeen Garg Death Case).
In a statement sent to the media on Friday, party president Lurinjyoti Gogoi and general secretary Jagadish Bhuyan condemned what they termed the government’s indifference, stating, “To maintain public confidence in the justice process for Zubeen Garg, the government should have taken swift and time-bound measures, but none have been seen so far.”
In fact, for a long time, Zubeen’s family members, admirers, and legal supporters have been demanding the formation of a fast-track court to dispose of the case. However, the government’s failure to show sincerity on such an important matter has been considered extremely unfortunate.
After Friday’s hearing, a shocking revelation came to light when the government advocate reportedly admitted that at the current pace, it may take more than 20 years to deliver justice. Reacting to this, the AJP leadership stated, “This remark exposes the state government’s failure and the neglect shown toward a great personality like Zubeen Garg.”
Earlier, on January 24, Garima Saikia Garg, Pami Borthakur, and Manoj Borthakur had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking urgent intervention in the case. They appealed for the formation of a special court in Assam and, considering the international dimension of the matter, urged diplomatic and legal steps to be taken in Singapore as well. However, no response has yet been received from the Prime Minister’s Office.
The Asom Jatiya Parishad has also raised several pointed questions for the government and the Chief Minister. Lurinjyoti Gogoi questioned, “Why is the government reluctant to form a fast-track court? Why have necessary steps not been taken to dispose of the case at the earliest? Why has the Chief Minister not given due importance to the family’s demand for a special court? Is there any influential force behind the government’s and the Chief Minister’s negligence in delivering justice? Why are the family’s legitimate and constitutional rights being ignored? The Chief Minister must clarify.”
According to the party, delivering justice to Zubeen Garg is neither a matter of charity nor political gain; it is a fundamental right.
Respecting the emotions and self-respect of the Assamese people, the party further demanded that the central government take necessary legal steps in Singapore and that the state government publish a fixed timeline for the trial. Gogoi and Bhuyan clearly stated, “Delivering justice to Zubeen Garg is not a matter of political advantage or disadvantage; it is a fundamental right. The government’s responsibility in this regard is to ensure a swift, transparent, and speedy trial. We demand that the Assam government immediately constitute a fast-track/special court to conduct the proceedings expeditiously. The government should remember that justice for Zubeen Garg is not a matter of mercy or favor; it is a question of the rights and dignity of the Assamese people.”
The party has warned that if the government’s negligence continues, it will launch a massive democratic movement in the coming days, as the struggle has now evolved from being a fight for one family into a battle for the self-respect of the entire community.
