Guwahati: A wave of intense political turbulence recently swept through Guwahati’s political corridors when senior Congress leader Bhupen Bora sent his resignation letter to the party’s central leadership (Bhupen Bora Resignation). The sudden move triggered widespread concern in state politics and pushed high-level party activity into overdrive. However, the charged atmosphere began to ease when Bora held a crucial meeting with the party’s top leadership. He later addressed the media alongside All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary Jitendra Singh and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Gaurav Gogoi.
Amid widespread speculation, Bora clarified that although he had taken the extreme step of submitting his resignation, he would reconsider the decision only after detailed discussions with his family. He stated that a final decision on the matter would be made clear by tomorrow.
Recalling his political journey that began in 1994, Bora delivered an emotional statement. He noted that the people of Assam have witnessed his unwavering service to the Congress party for the past 32 years. Behind his decision to resign, he revealed, was a sense of grievance—he felt that his repeated communications regarding various internal party issues had been consistently ignored by the leadership.
Bora’s account also reflected a painful narrative of personal sacrifice. He expressed sorrow that his family had endured significant hardships because of his political identity. At one point, his brother’s business establishment had to be shut down, which was later taken over by a secretary of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee. Despite these allegations, Bora stood firm as a self-respecting and capable leader. He reminded the media that among 126 legislators, he had once been honored with the “Best MLA” award. Even as a former legislator, when he was entrusted with the responsibility of state president, he maintained the dignity and stature of the position.
Meanwhile, the central leadership has shown urgency in resolving the dispute. Jitendra Singh confirmed that the AICC president has already refused to accept Bora’s resignation letter. Singh emphasized that Bora is an indispensable pillar of the party who has successfully handled numerous challenging responsibilities over the years. According to him, the internal conflict has been resolved through in-house discussions, and Rahul Gandhi personally spoke to Bora over the phone.
With the upcoming Assembly elections in mind, Singh asserted firmly that Bora would not only remain a strong voice against the present “corrupt government,” but would also lead the party’s election committee and campaign efforts.
Adding an emotional dimension to the developments, APCC President Gaurav Gogoi described Bhupen Bora as a “strong pillar” of the Congress party. He praised him as a “true Congressman” and a fearless fighter who has battled opposing forces in Assam for more than three decades. In a humble gesture, Gogoi extended his hand toward his senior colleague and said that if any party decision had hurt Bora, he, as a “younger brother,” sincerely sought forgiveness.
This collective show of unity suggests that while Bora is taking some time to consult his family, the party leadership is in no way prepared to lose a seasoned regional strategist.
