Guwahati:Excluding the Congress, other opposition parties met on Thursday at Hotel Gateway in Guwahati. Those present at the meeting included Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi, Russell Hussain, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, Jagadish Bhuyan, CPI(M)’s Suprakash Talukdar, CPI’s Kanak Gogoi, and Krishna Gogoi (Assam Opposition Alliance 2026).
Call to Expedite Alliance Talks
After the meeting, speaking to the media, AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi urged the Congress to speed up the alliance process. He said, “Himanta Biswa Sarma has expanded the politics of buying and selling. At a time when politics of fear, intimidation, and blackmail is going on, we want to strengthen the alliance to send a clear message to the people. The alliance process should not be delayed.”
He further added that forces opposed to the BJP’s communal politics should be brought together in this effort. “The Congress must take the initiative in this regard. With only 45 days left for the elections, this period is very crucial for us,” he said.
Meanwhile, regarding the alliance, Ajit Kumar Bhuyan stated that leaders of six political parties attended the meeting. The gathering expressed deep concern over the slow pace of opposition unity and seat-sharing talks. He said they have urged the Congress to expedite seat-sharing discussions in order to defeat the BJP. He also emphasized the importance of secular parties coming together to jointly conduct the campaign.
Raijor Dal Demands 15 Seats
Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi also called for an immediate finalization of the alliance. “We are worried about the delay in alliance talks. The alliance must be formed soon. Alliance partners should hold joint meetings and public gatherings,” he said.
He added that Assam Pradesh Congress president Gaurav Gogoi had earlier said that discussions would be finalized by the 19th. “So we are hopeful of receiving good news tomorrow or the day after. We are restless due to the delay,” he remarked.
Akhil Gogoi further stated that Raijor Dal has demanded 15 seats from the Congress. “We have a strong position in 46 constituencies. However, we have sought 15 seats from the Congress,” he said.
