Assam Jatiya Parishad Releases First Candidate List for 8 SeatsAJP Releases First Candidate List for 8 Seats, Lurinjyoti Gogoi to Contest from Khowang

Guwahati: The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), one of the regional parties in the state, today announced its first list of candidates. Accordingly, the party has declared candidates for 8 constituencies (Assam Jatiya Parishad Candidate List 2026).

As per the list, AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi will contest from the Khowang Assembly constituency, while working president Rajen Gohain will contest from the Barhampur constituency. Meanwhile, Bani Das has been nominated from Morigaon, Pankaj Lochan Goswami from Palasbari, Dilip Baruah from Bajali, Jibon Chutia from Sarupathar, Mainak Patra from Dibrugarh, and Rezaul Karim Choudhury from Binnakandi.

After the announcement of the candidate list, Lurinjyoti Gogoi, the president of the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), stated,
“Previously, elections were held in three phases. This time, it feels as though they are working with a well-planned, specific goal and objective. During the Bihu season, the people of Assam will remember the People’s artist Zubeen Garg through his songs. Therefore, fearing that the public might become alert and conscious against injustice, they have planned to conduct the election in a single phase, allowing only 13 days for the election campaign.”

He further added, “Moreover, the election has been planned in a single phase to ensure that the campaign wave in Upper Assam does not influence Central or Lower Assam.”

On the other hand, AJP general secretary Jagadish Bhuyan said, ”To ensure effective party-wide campaigning, it is necessary that at least one among the President, Working President, or General Secretary refrains from contesting. Accordingly, I have initially decided to opt out of the race. However, I will reach a final conclusion only after consulting with the party workers and the people of Sadiya, and will update the media thereafter.”

Regarding protests in several constituencies, including Binnakandi, over candidate selection, AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi said, “Protest is a democratic process. If someone who has worked for a long time with the hope of getting a ticket is deprived, it is natural for them or their supporters to protest. However, compromises are inevitable in alliances. Someone has to make sacrifices. Since our goal is to oust the BJP, we must prioritize public aspirations over personal interests.”

Lurinjyoti Gogoi also expressed optimism that the alliance between Raijor Dal and the Congress party would be finalized respectfully. Meanwhile, dismissing reports that AJP would field a candidate against Akhil Gogoi, he said, “We do not want to do anything that would give the BJP an advantage. Our main goal is to oust the BJP. In this regard, our weapon is alliance.”
