Assam Congress Releases First 42 Candidates for 2026 Assembly PollsCongress Fires First Shot: 42-Name Candidate List Drops for Assam 2026

News Desk: While Assam was still drenched in the colors of Phalgutotsav, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) jolted the political world on Tuesday night — releasing its first candidate list of 42 names for the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections. The list, formally issued by AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal, carries a striking mix: seasoned heavyweights, fresh faces, and more than 10 first-timers stepping into the electoral arena for the very first time (Assam Congress Candidate List 2026).

Of Assam’s 126 constituencies, only 42 have been covered in this initial announcement. The remaining 84 seats are expected to be declared within the coming week. Before this list took its final shape, Screening Committee Chairperson Priyanka Gandhi Vadra visited Assam on February 19 and 20, holding extensive discussions with state leaders. That was followed by a crucial round of talks in Delhi, where a delegation led by Gaurav Gogoi sat down with the party’s top brass to finalize the names.

Dynasty, Legacy, and New Blood

What immediately stands out in this list is the unmistakable thread of political lineage running through it. Three sons of former Chief Ministers and two sons of sitting MPs have made the cut — a reflection, perhaps, of how deeply family networks remain woven into the fabric of Congress politics.

Gaurav Gogoi, President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee and a sitting MP, will contest from Jorhat — his first-ever Assembly election. He is the son of former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

  • Debabrata Saikia, Leader of the Opposition and son of former Chief Minister Hiteswar Saikia, has once again been fielded from Nazira.
  • Diganta Barman, son of former Chief Minister Bhumidar Barman, will fight from the Barkhetri constituency.
  • Tanjil Hussain, son of Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain, gets the ticket from Samaguri. And Pratik Bordoloi, son of Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi, has been named for Margherita.

A new generation, ready or not, is being pushed to the front.

Alliance Tensions Surface

The list has effectively poured cold water on speculation about a formal alliance with the Raijor Dal. Congress has gone ahead and declared its own candidates in several constituencies that Raijor Dal had been eyeing — including Dispur, Margherita, Barchala, Dimow, Bongaigaon, and Duliajan. That said, Congress has left Mandia and East Goalpara — seats Raijor Dal had specifically requested — unnamed for now. Whether that silence signals room for negotiation remains to be seen.

In Bihpuria, Congress has fielded Narayan Bhuyan, who may well find himself squaring off against former Congress president Bhupen Bora, now with the BJP. Meanwhile, in Nalbari, Ashok Sharma has been tasked with taking on BJP minister Jayanta Mallaboruah — a tough ask by any measure.

Himanta’s Sharp Response

Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma was quick to react — particularly to Gaurav Gogoi’s entry in Jorhat. He remarked, with a certain pointed simplicity, that BJP will field “an ordinary boy from an ordinary home” against him. Political circles are already buzzing with a name: Siddhanku Ankur Baruah, former president of the BJP’s Youth Wing, who fits that description and stands in sharp contrast to the dynastic optics Congress has put on display. The current MLA, Hitendra Nath Goswami, is over 70 — making a generational shift on the BJP side all but inevitable.

The chessboard is set. The opening moves have been made.
