Rhino calf rescue Kaziranga: Stranded Rhino Calf Rescued from Burapahar Range, Shifted to CWRCRescue of Stranded Rhino Calf at Burapahar Range

NAGAON: A male rhinoceros calf was found stranded on 21 January 2026 at around 4:00 PM in the Sarali area of the Burapahar Range. Soon after the calf was detected, forest officials initiated efforts to locate its mother to facilitate possible reunification (Rhino calf rescue Kaziranga).

The search operation was carried out under the supervision of the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), EAWL Division. Departmental elephants, thermal drones, and frontline forest personnel were deployed to conduct a thorough and systematic search of the surrounding area. At the same time, a veterinary team comprising Dr. Bhaskar Choudhury, Dr. Mohit Nyol, and Dr. Saurobh Borgohain remained stationed near the calf to provide immediate supportive care and to closely monitor its condition during the search period.

Despite sustained efforts for over 24 hours, the mother rhino could not be traced, and reunification was deemed not possible. Keeping the safety and welfare of the calf in mind, the Forest Department decided to rescue it. The operation was carried out at around 4:00 PM on 22 January 2026, after which the calf was safely transported to the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) for further care, treatment, and rehabilitation.

Officials stated that the Forest Department continues to prioritize wildlife conservation and remains committed to ensuring the well-being of rescued animals through timely intervention and appropriate care.
