National Desk: On Wednesday, a court reprimanded a BJP leader regarding the allegations of dual citizenship against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. The BJP leader in question is Vignesh Shishir (Rahul Gandhi Dual Citizenship Case).
It is noteworthy that the BJP leader had approached the court alleging that the Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, holds citizenship in Britain in addition to India. On Wednesday, the Special MP-MLA Court in Lucknow dismissed these allegations. Furthermore, the judge reprimanded the complainant, Karnataka BJP leader Vignesh Kumar.
The case involving these allegations against the Leader of the Opposition was initially filed in the Special MP-MLA Court of Raebareli. Later, considering security concerns, the Allahabad High Court transferred the case to the Special Court in Lucknow. The complainant BJP leader had also claimed to possess documents proving Rahul Gandhi’s dual citizenship.
The complainant had demanded the registration of a case against Rahul Gandhi under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Official Secrets Act of 1923, along with the cancellation of his Indian citizenship.
After completing eight days of hearings on January 14, the court of Special Judge Alok Verma dismissed the case on Wednesday. According to Judge Alok Verma, “This court does not have the authority to decide on matters of citizenship. This lawsuit is essentially an abuse of the legal process.”
In this context, it may be mentioned that the Allahabad High Court had also recently dismissed a case regarding Rahul Gandhi’s dual citizenship.
It is significant that BJP leaders have raised questions about Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship on multiple occasions in the past. Previously, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy had filed a case in the Delhi High Court on the same issue. Swamy claimed that annual returns filed by Rahul Gandhi in 2005 and 2006 through a British firm, Backops Limited, served as evidence of his British citizenship.
Additionally, allegations were made that in a declaration for a company registered in England under Rahul’s name, he had identified himself as a British citizen. Demands for the cancellation of his nomination had also been raised several times, asserting that Rahul Gandhi is a British citizen.
While BJP leaders have repeatedly attempted to prove Rahul Gandhi is a foreign citizen, the Central Government has not been seen making any specific comments on the matter. Rather, the Central Government has been observed avoiding the issue altogether.
