National Desk: Many people may recall the film Munna Bhai MBBS, which depicted various unethical tricks used by the protagonist to gain admission into a medical college. In one such scene, the protagonist deliberately injures himself to secure continued access to the medical college (NEET Admission Shock). In a similarly shocking and almost unimaginable incident, a young man from Uttar Pradesh has done something extraordinary that an ordinary person would never dare to do, in order to pursue an attractive career as a doctor.
This shocking incident has once again brought attention to how intense competition in education and careers is affecting mental health. Many students of the new generation, who see career as everything, seem ready to do anything to shape an attractive future. A large section of the youth appears to be suffering from severe mental pressure.
The incident took place in Jaunpur district of Uttar Pradesh. A young man from Khalilpur village of the district, who dreamed of establishing himself as a doctor, cut off one of his own legs in order to gain admission to a government medical college. The youth, identified as Suraj Bhaskar, approximately 20 years old, had failed twice in the medical entrance examination NEET, which is conducted for admission to government medical colleges. After this, he took this extreme step.
According to the police, he wanted to secure admission by submitting false information and claiming to be a person with a disability after amputating his own leg. The police received a complaint regarding the incident on January 18, following which an investigation was initiated. Suraj Bhaskar’s elder brother, Akash Bhaskar, lodged a complaint with the police stating that some unidentified miscreants had attacked his brother, cut off his leg, and left him unconscious. Based on this complaint, the police registered a case and began an investigation. Later, the investigation was handed over to City Circle Officer Goldy Gupta.
On January 21, the police submitted the investigation report to Additional Superintendent of Police (City) Ayush Srivastava. After this, the real truth came to light.
According to the police, during the course of investigation, several inconsistencies were found in Suraj’s statements. The police examined his mobile phone. During the examination, they found evidence of Suraj’s relationship with a young woman through a particular phone number. The woman was questioned by the police.
In addition, the investigating officers recovered a diary belonging to Suraj. In the diary, Suraj had written that he would secure admission to the MBBS course by any means in 2026.
According to police sources, Suraj Bhaskar, a resident of Khalilpur under Line Bazar police station, had completed a Diploma in Pharmacy (D. Pharma). He was preparing for the NEET examination. After failing to clear NEET twice, he became mentally distressed and depressed. As a result, in order to use a disability certificate under the NEET admission process and avail the associated relaxation to fulfill his dream of earning an MBBS degree, he allegedly amputated a portion of his own left leg, the police investigation revealed. Later, he falsely alleged that some miscreants had cut off his leg.
The police told the media, “The accused tried to mislead the investigation by fabricating a false story. However, after prolonged interrogation and examination of evidence, the real truth emerged.”
According to the investigating officers, Suraj stated that when he regained consciousness the next morning after the incident, he came to know that his left leg had been cut off. Based on Suraj’s complaint, the police had also registered a case against two unidentified persons and started an investigation. However, Suraj repeatedly changed his statements and tried to mislead the police. This behavior deepened the suspicion of the investigating team.
The police recovered some injections from a nearby field. Police officials suspect that these injections could be anesthetic drugs. Since Suraj had a pharmacy degree, the police believe that he had good knowledge of administering injections. According to police officials, the leg appeared to have been severed using a mechanical device. The police have not been able to recover the severed part of the leg.
The investigation also revealed that in October last year, Suraj had gone to Banaras Hindu University (BHU) to obtain a disability certificate. However, his attempt to get the certificate had failed.
Investigating officers stated that as soon as the police received information about the incident, Suraj was taken to the district hospital. From there, he was referred to a trauma center for advanced treatment. Police stated that Suraj’s condition is currently stable, and after he is discharged from the hospital, his statement will be recorded and further legal procedures will be followed.
