Guwahati: The Chief Election Commissioner of India, Gyanesh Kumar, concluded his two-day visit to Assam and addressed the media on Wednesday, summarizing the purpose and outcomes of his trip (Electoral Roll Revision Assam).
As part of his two-day schedule, he held discussions on Tuesday regarding preparations for the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly elections. During the visit, he met representatives of political parties as well as Deputy Commissioners of all districts of the state to review election preparedness.
It was during his interaction with the Deputy Commissioners that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar appreciated the Nagaon district administration and Deputy Commissioner Devashish Sharma for their performance. The appreciation came after the State Election Commissioner Anurag Goel briefed him about the firm measures adopted by the Nagaon district administration in smoothly conducting the Special Revision (SR) of electoral rolls.
According to the information shared, the strong steps taken by Deputy Commissioner Devashish Sharma and the district administration during the SR process ensured that not a single voter’s name was wrongly deleted or included in the district. Although there had been considerable controversy following complaints from some quarters alleging that several living persons were declared dead, the district administration’s firm actions ensured that only those names genuinely liable for deletion were removed from the electoral rolls. No voter’s name was deleted unjustly.
Data show that the district election office in Nagaon received a total of 70,716 complaints seeking deletion of names from the electoral roll. Of these, only 43,867 names were deleted after verification based on proper documentation.
Similarly, 61,780 applications were received for inclusion of names in the voter list. After scrutiny of documents, only 43,121 names were included.
Through detailed verification of records and decisive administrative measures in both deletion and inclusion processes under the SR exercise, the Nagaon district administration completed the Special Revision and published the final electoral roll. It was for this systematic handling of the process that the Chief Election Commissioner praised the Nagaon district administration.
