Safiqur Rahman Nagaon: In a unique blend of environmental awareness and democratic responsibility, Nagaon marked World Water Day with a district-wide pledge campaign promoting both water conservation and voter awareness (World Water Day Electoral Pledge).
Observed annually to highlight the critical importance of water, this year’s World Water Day celebrations in the district carried an added significance in view of the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly Election 2026. Across various villages, people gathered at water supply scheme sites to take part in a special oath-taking programme aimed at reinforcing civic responsibility.
The initiative, undertaken as part of the Election Commission’s Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) campaign, encouraged citizens to recognize that “life is impossible without water, and its conservation is our collective duty.” Alongside this, participants pledged to actively exercise their voting rights and motivate others to do the same.
Residents collectively resolved: “We will conserve water, cast our votes responsibly, and inspire others to participate in building a strong and vibrant democracy.”
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from local communities, reflecting a growing awareness that safeguarding natural resources and strengthening democratic values go hand in hand. Officials noted that such initiatives play a crucial role in shaping responsible citizens who are committed both to environmental sustainability and the nation’s future.
With this dual-message campaign, Nagaon district administration has effectively underscored that protecting water and participating in elections are equally vital duties of every citizen.
