Nagaon: The four-day Dibrugarh University International Literature Festival, attended by more than two hundred literary critics from India and abroad, has concluded. Amid the events of the festival, on February 20, the English translation of eleven short stories by eminent short story writer and essayist Shivananda Kakati was officially released (Shivananda Kakati Eleven Stories English Translation). The translated collection is titled “Eleven Stories”.
The volume has been edited by his daughter, noted essayist and academic Dr. Madri Kakati. The book was formally released by distinguished New Delhi-based writer Dr. Neena Verma and retired Indian Civil Service officer Dhruva Hazarika. The ceremony took place at the Rangghar Auditorium of Dibrugarh University.
Translators of the Collection
The eleven stories of Shivananda Kakati have been translated into English by Pradeep Acharya, Bibhas Choudhury, Minakshi Borkotoki, Leera Neog Bora, Prismita Singh, Pranjal Sharma Vashistha, Krishna Dulal Barua, and Dr. Madri Kakati.
About Shivananda Kakati
Shivananda Kakati is widely known as a distinguished short story writer of Assam. He began his literary career in the 1990s. Among his published works are “Amrityu Amrit” (1996), “Gagini Tor Pani Kiman” (2000), “Bordaichila” (2001), “Jalchabit Shesh Saj” (2007), “Baroniya Alibat”, “Alibatot”, and “Ayu Jai Ale-Jale”, among others.
His collection of plays titled “Kendrabihin Britta aru Anya Natak” (1998) has also been published. His essay collections include “Swarajottar Nagaon: Nibandhamala” (1998) and “Sarbagunakar” (1999). Last year, another collection of his short stories titled “Neti” was published.
In 1995, Kakati received the Munin Borkotoki Award. In 2004, for his short story “Jalchabit Shesh Saj”, he was honoured with the All India Katha Award.
Kakati is a retired officer of the State Bank of India. At present, he is practicing as an advocate in Nagaon. During his student days at Nagaon College in the 1970s, and later as well, he wrote one-act plays and radio dramas, marking the beginning of his literary journey. His radio drama “Duhsomoy Somoy” received an All India award.
About the Editor
Madri Kakati, the editor of “Eleven Stories”, is a professor by profession. She is currently based in Lucknow due to her work. She is the daughter of eminent short story writer Shivananda Kakati and retired professor Muni Kakati.
Through social media, Madri Kakati initiated an innovative teaching method titled “Neighborhood Teacher”, which gained popularity. She is fluent in more than five languages. She is associated with several national-level media houses. On social media, she is also known by the name “Medusa”.
