Sarbananda Sonowal forged letter controversy FIR lodged in AssamFIR registered after forged letter circulated using Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal’s name

Guwahati: A major political controversy has surfaced in Assam after a forged letter, falsely attributed to Union Minister and former Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, began circulating widely on social media platforms. The fabricated document was allegedly designed to malign the Union Minister’s reputation and create political confusion ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.

The fake letter, fraudulently addressed to the National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was created using a counterfeit official letterhead and a forged signature, giving it a misleading appearance of authenticity.

What the Forged Letter Claimed

According to officials, the forged document attempted to project a distorted and misleading picture of the political situation in Assam by falsely alleging growing public dissatisfaction with the BJP over issues such as corruption, unemployment, and misuse of power. It also made a fabricated suggestion that changing the current Chief Ministerial face was necessary to regain public trust, while misleadingly predicting that the BJP would be reduced to securing only 35 to 40 seats in the 2026 Assembly elections if immediate corrective steps were not taken. Authorities have categorically stated that all such claims mentioned in the letter are entirely false, baseless, and deliberately crafted to spread misinformation.

Official Clarification from Sarbananda Sonowal’s Office

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal’s office issued an official statement categorically denying any involvement with the forged letter. The statement described the act as a deliberate and malicious attempt involving forgery, impersonation, and misuse of official government identity.

“It has come to my notice that a forged letter bearing my official letterhead and a fake signature is being circulated with malafide intent. This is a serious criminal offence aimed at spreading misinformation and discrediting a constitutional authority,” the statement said.

FIR Lodged, Investigation Underway

Taking serious note of the incident, the Minister’s office has confirmed that a First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged with the appropriate law enforcement agencies. Police have been asked to investigate the matter on priority and initiate strict legal action against those involved in fabricating and circulating the forged document.

Public Advisory

The Union Minister’s office has appealed to the public and media organisations to avoid sharing or relying on unverified documents circulating on social media. Citizens have been urged to depend only on official sources for information related to the Minister or the Government of India, warning that such misinformation campaigns are often aimed at disturbing public harmony and political stability.

Authorities have reiterated that spreading forged documents is a punishable offence under Indian law, and those responsible will be brought to justice.
