Nagaon:The 35th biennial conference of the Nagaon District Brahmin Society was held with great enthusiasm on Sunday as a one-day event at the society’s district office premises at Nonoi Badal Gaon (Nagaon District Brahmin Society Conference). More than just a formal gathering, the conference served as an important platform for unity among members of the Brahmin community of the district.

Following a morning cleanliness drive, the day-long programme began with the hoisting of the flag by district committee president Narendra Nath Sharma. This was followed by a memorial tribute offered by executive president Bedananda Bhagawati.

One of the most memorable moments of the conference was the tree plantation carried out at the district Brahmin Society office campus in memory of artist Zubeen Garg. Former minister and educationist Girindra Kumar Baruah planted a nahar sapling and remarked that at a time when the younger generation was strongly drawn towards Western music, it was Zubeen Garg who, through a new approach, rekindled their interest in Assamese songs.

In the afternoon, an open meeting was held under the chairmanship of Narendra Nath Sharma. Addressing the gathering, Nagaon–Batadrava constituency MLA Rupak Sharma respectfully recalled the contributions of the Brahmin community to social life. He stated that Brahmins must acknowledge their responsibility towards society and move forward with reform-oriented principles. Notably, the MLA also assured possible assistance in the proposal to establish a memorial site in Nagaon in memory of Madhav Kandali.

During the meeting, Barhampur MLA Jitu Goswami expressed concern over the younger generation drifting away from their traditions amid the rush of modernity. He urged that youth be guided in the right direction through intellectual and traditional knowledge.

Another highlight of the conference was an insightful lecture titled “Nitya Sandhya and the Gayatri Mahamantra” by eminent Sanskrit scholar Dr. Nitish Chandra Sharma Shastri. At the same event, Assam Brahmin Society president Amulya Nath Sharma formally released the magazine Brahmajyoti, edited by Jiten Barkataki.

The open meeting was conducted by general secretary Dwijen Goswami. Organised with the assistance of Dr. Dwijen Sharma and Jiten Barkataki, the meeting was attended by Assam Brahmin Society chief secretary Tutul Borthakur, district Brahmin Society advisers Yajnapati Sharma Shastri, Mahendra Sharma, Anup Borthakur, along with several senior officials and representatives. During the programme, three senior citizens who rendered special service to society and meritorious students were felicitated.

At the conclusion of the conference, a new committee was formed for the next two years:

President: Narendra Nath Sharma
Executive President: Bedananda Bhagawati
Vice Presidents: Ashok Sharma and Prashanta Sharma
