Nagaon : In a strong symbolic gesture against the social evil of child marriage, Nagaon District Commissioner Debashish Sharma, IAS, on Tuesday personally flagged off and drove the Mobile Information and Awareness Vehicle, marking the launch of the nationwide 100-Day Special Campaign for a Child Marriage-Free India in the district (Nagaon Child Marriage Awareness Drive).
The landmark initiative is jointly organised by the District Women Empowerment Centre and voluntary organisation Kochi Lok Manch, with active support from the Nagaon District Administration. The campaign aims to spread awareness at the grassroots level and galvanise community participation to eradicate child marriage.
The inauguration ceremony was held at the District Commissioner’s office premises, where Sharma urged citizens from all sections of society to unite against the regressive practice.
In his address, the District Commissioner emphasised that child marriage robs children—especially girls—of their childhood and exposes them to serious risks related to maternal and child health, while also hindering social progress. He underlined that ensuring education, safety, and empowerment of every girl child is essential to building a strong and healthy India.
The event was attended by Additional Commissioner (Women & Child Department) Debahuti Bora, District Social Welfare Officer Bholanath Pegu, officials from the Women Empowerment Centre, and members of Kochi Lok Manch.
The mobile awareness campaign is expected to play a crucial role in educating communities, mobilising public support, and reinforcing the collective vision of a child marriage-free India.
