Kaliabor: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday laid the foundation stone for the ₹6,957-crore Kaziranga Elevated Corridor and virtually flagged off two Amrit Bharat Express trains during a public programme in Assam’s Nagaon district.

Arriving in Kaliabor from Guwahati as part of the final leg of his two-day Assam visit, the Prime Minister performed the Bhoomi Poojan of the ambitious Kaziranga project. Addressing a large gathering, Modi said development-oriented welfare initiatives in Assam have strengthened the BJP’s vision of growth and good governance.

Referring to the BJP’s recent electoral performances in Maharashtra, Kerala civic bodies and the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, the Prime Minister said the party continues to receive people’s trust even after two decades in power. According to him, voters are rewarding the BJP for its focus on governance and development.

Taking a swipe at the Congress, Modi alleged that the party has lost public confidence due to what he described as negative politics. He accused the opposition of allowing infiltration in Assam during its tenure, claiming that illegal immigrants encroached upon forest land, wildlife corridors and traditional institutions for electoral gains.

“Infiltration increased for decades under Congress rule in Assam, affecting forests, animal corridors and local heritage,” the Prime Minister said.

Highlighting the ecological importance of the project, Modi said the Kaziranga Elevated Corridor would ensure safe wildlife movement, especially during floods. He also stated that consistent efforts by the BJP government helped achieve zero rhino poaching deaths in Kaziranga National Park in 2025.

“India has shown the world that ecology and economy can move forward together,” he said.

According to officials, the corridor is designed to facilitate safe animal movement across Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, reduce road accidents on National Highway 715, boost eco-tourism and create employment opportunities for local residents.

The project is part of the four-laning of the Kaliabor–Numaligarh stretch of NH-715 and includes nearly 34.45 km of elevated, wildlife-friendly corridors, along with bypasses at Jakhalabandha and Bokakhat. The Prime Minister also reviewed a detailed model of the Kaziranga Elevated Corridor at the venue.
