Modi Launches Guwahati–Silchar High-Speed Corridor to Transform Connectivity in NortheastPM Narendra Modi Lays Foundation for Guwahati–Silchar High-Speed Corridor in Assam

Silchar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday performed the ground-breaking ceremony for the Guwahati–Silchar High-Speed Corridor, a major infrastructure project aimed at reducing the distance between the Barak Valley and the Brahmaputra Valley (Guwahati–Silchar High-Speed Corridor).

The project, to be built at a cost of Rs.22,864 crore, is expected to reduce travel time between Guwahati and Silchar to just five hours, and is set to accelerate trade, tourism and overall development in the state.

During the visit, the Prime Minister also performed the ground-breaking ceremony for the long-awaited Silchar flyover and an Agricultural College at Patharkandi. On the occasion, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma presented Modi with a traditional Assamese uttariya and an idol of Goddess Durga.

Addressing a public meeting in Silchar, Modi sharply criticised the Congress party.
He said, “Wherever the lock on the minds of Congress people gets shut, that is where our work begins.”

Referring to the Guwahati–Silchar High-Speed Corridor, the Prime Minister said, “This is not just a national highway project — it marks the end of a decades-long wait for the people of the Northeast.”

He added that through Silchar, the corridor would strengthen connectivity for Mizoram, Manipur and Tripura. “In front of these three states lie Bangladesh and Myanmar, and beyond them the vast markets of Southeast Asia. Therefore, today the foundation has been laid for a connection that will lead to a bright future. Farmers of Assam and the Northeast will benefit from this corridor. The new generation will gain new opportunities. This connectivity will drive growth in industry and tourism,” Modi said.

Criticising Congress further, the Prime Minister stated, “Just as Congress abandoned the Northeast to its own fate, Congress played a very significant role in the deteriorating state of the Barak Valley as well. At the time of India’s independence, the Congress allowed boundaries to be drawn in such a way that the connection between Assam’s Barak Valley and the sea was severed. The Barak Valley that was once renowned as a commercial route and an industrial hub was stripped of its inherent strength.”

He added, “After Independence, Congress governments did nothing for the development of the Barak Valley. But under the BJP government, this situation has changed. The BJP government is continuously working to develop the Barak Valley as a commercial hub.”
Emphasising Assam’s unity, Modi said, “Unity even amidst diversity is the strength of Assam. The Barak Valley connects not only Assam but also the Northeast and West Bengal.”

Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Assam is moving towards a golden future.

He said, “Development and progress are now touching every section of society in Assam. Under the BJP government, tea garden workers have also received land rights.”

Sarma further added, “Whether it is fighting poverty in Assam, bringing the flow of development, or establishing an environment of peace — under the Prime Minister’s leadership, we have been able to build a strong foundation. Now Assam will only look forward and will not look back. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is moving ahead with the resolve to build a developed nation. Our effort will be to strengthen Assam as a powerful state alongside India’s growth.”
