Guwahati Newborn Body Panic Creates Chaos on GS Road, Police Clarify FactsNewborn’s Body Triggers Panic After Rapido Ride in Guwahati

Guwahati: A disturbing scene played out in the city on Wednesday when a man traveling with the body of a newborn was stopped midway, leading to confusion, suspicion and a police intervention that later brought clarity to the situation (Guwahati Newborn Body Panic).

At first glance, it appeared alarming. A man carrying a bag with a baby’s body inside, speaking about heading toward the Brahmaputra river — the details spread quickly, and so did panic. But as the hours passed, the narrative shifted.

What Happened on GS Road

According to available information, the man reached GS Road carrying a green plastic bag, inside which was a packet. From there, he booked a Rapido bike and began heading toward Paltanbazar.

The rider, Rubul Das, proceeded along GS Road as with any other passenger. It was during the ride that things took an unexpected turn. The passenger reportedly told the rider that the bag contained the body of a newborn child and that he intended to throw it into the Brahmaputra river. He also offered ₹50 extra as an offline payment to be taken to the riverbank.

The statement left the rider shaken. Unsure of what he had just heard, Rubul Das stopped the bike midway and alerted people nearby. Within minutes, a crowd gathered. The situation escalated quickly, and the police were informed.

Police Step In

Dispur Police arrived at the spot and detained the man, later identified as Mamruj Hussain of Dhing. He was taken to Dispur Police Station for questioning. Officers examined documents and conducted a detailed interrogation to understand what had actually happened.

At that stage, suspicion was high. But the explanation that emerged during questioning painted a different picture.

The Explanation

Police said the newborn was Mamruj’s own child. The baby had died in the mother’s womb on Tuesday. The delivery took place at Cosmo Hospital in Dispur, where Mamruj’s wife remains under treatment.

On Wednesday around 10 AM, after completing hospital formalities, Mamruj took custody of the baby’s body. He lives in Borbheti, Dhing, and had planned to take the body home by train from Paltanbazar Railway Station to perform the janaza there.

To reach the station, he booked the Rapido bike. However, his words during the journey — particularly the mention of the body — led to suspicion and the chain of events that followed.

After Verification

After verifying hospital records and related documents, Dispur Police allowed Mamruj Hussain to leave.

Speaking later, Mamruj expressed anguish over the misunderstanding, saying the commotion created by the Rapido rider led to the chaotic situation. He said he intended to conduct the janaza on Wednesday and would arrange money to return the next day to bring his wife home from the hospital.

Police officials said necessary inquiry is continuing to rule out any other angle. However, based on the documents examined, the child had died before birth.

What unfolded on a busy stretch of road as a moment of alarm ultimately revealed a story of grief — one shaped by shock, suspicion, and clarification.
