Nagaon: Persons with disabilities are an inseparable part of our society. However, due to the lack of proper guidance, access to government schemes, and modern assistive devices, many are often deprived of opportunities to fully develop their potential. With the objective of addressing this issue, and inspired by the message “Service to Humanity is Service to God” in connection with the upcoming Ram Navami Festival 2026, an “Awareness cum Assessment Camp” was successfully organized today at the premises of Shri Shirdi Sai Baba Temple in Puranigudam, Nagaon district. The initiative received full support from Samagra Shiksha Nagaon, the District Social Welfare Department, and the National Health Mission (NHM), Nagaon. The camp brought a new ray of hope to many families in the region.

A total of 236 beneficiaries registered at the camp. Although the day’s programme focused solely on awareness generation and preliminary assessment, this process will pave the way for the distribution of necessary assistive devices to the registered beneficiaries in the near future. A team of specialists and technical experts carefully examined each participant and conducted proper assessments based on their individual needs.
The expert team included Camp Coordinator and Lecturer in Occupational Therapy Dr. Sunil Kumar Ram, Assistant Professor and Speech & Hearing Specialist Ravi Kumar, Rehabilitation Officer Raj Kamal Pandey, Vocational Instructor Subhendu Kole, Prosthetics and Orthotics Engineer Mrityunjay, and Special Educator Duploy Kumar Das.
Speaking about the immense potential of persons with disabilities, Camp Coordinator Dr. Sunil Kumar Ram said, “Being specially-abled does not mean a person is helpless. If provided with proper assistive devices and necessary support, they can build their own identity in society. Based on today’s assessments, we will soon provide each registered beneficiary with assistive devices according to their individual requirements.”

He further emphasized the importance of awareness regarding government schemes, stating that many parents are still unaware of the benefits available for their children. “Camps like this create a direct connection between beneficiaries and government schemes,” he added.
Managing Trustee of Shri Shirdi Sai Baba Sewa Trust, Nagaon, Durlav Pawan Barua, remarked that persons with disabilities are an inseparable part of society and their dreams deserve equal importance. “Today’s camp is a small yet extremely significant step toward transforming those dreams into reality,” he said. He also expressed gratitude and appreciation to the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, and extended thanks to Pride East Entertainment’s Managing Director, Mrs. Rinee Bhuvan Sharma, for their encouragement and support.
Similarly, Jon Rajkhowa, Treasurer of Nagaon Para Sports Association, stated that proper assessment and modern assistive technology can make a specially-abled person self-reliant. “This will give them the confidence to move forward in sports, education, and all walks of life,” he said.

A New Horizon of Hope: Emotional Responses from Beneficiaries and Parents
An emotional parent present at the camp shared concerns about their child’s future, saying, “There is always anxiety about what lies ahead for our child. But after attending today’s camp, we feel hopeful. If our child receives the necessary assistive devices, it could completely transform their life.”
A young participant also expressed his feelings, saying that for the first time, he felt confident that he too could achieve something meaningful in life. The spark of hope and confidence visible in his eyes reflected the true success of the entire initiative.
Awareness and assessment are not merely about registration; they represent compassion, rights, and the recognition of the potential within every individual. It is hoped that today’s initiative will open new pathways for many specially-abled children in the district to turn their dreams into reality.
The camp was held from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM and received warm appreciation from the local community. The organizers expressed their commitment to continuing such welfare-oriented initiatives in the future.
