Assam Seat Sharing 2026: BJP-Led Alliance Locks 89 Seats Ahead of Polls2026 Assam Assembly Elections: BJP-Led Alliance Seals Seat-Sharing Deal After High-Level Delhi Meeting

News Desk: With the Assam Assembly Elections just around the corner, political temperatures across the state are rising fast. On Tuesday, the ruling alliance’s seat-sharing puzzle was finally put to rest after a high-stakes meeting between BJP’s central leadership and the state unit in New Delhi (Assam Seat Sharing 2026). The Core Committee sat down at JP Nadda’s residence from 1 PM, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah also present at the table. Besides sorting out the Assam seat arrangement, the meeting also touched on candidate selection for Puducherry.

Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma attended alongside state BJP President Dilip Saikia, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and BJP’s state in-charge Nitin Nabin.

Who Gets What: Breaking Down the Alliance Math

After the meeting wrapped up, CM Himanta stepped out to address the media and made it official. Out of Assam’s 126 assembly seats, here’s how the pie has been sliced:

  • Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP): 89 seats
  • Asom Gana Parishad (AGP): 26 seats
  • Bodoland People’s Front (BPF): 11 seats

For AGP, this is a bit of a step down from what the party was hoping for. Back in 2016, they contested 30 seats. In 2021, they fought on 29 seats. This time around, the party pushed for more but eventually had to make peace with 26.

Fresh Faces and Youth at the Forefront

CM Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma also gave a clear signal about what the candidate list might look like, and it sounds like quite a shake-up is on the way. “The list will have many more new faces and women. In this election, representatives of the younger generation will get priority. Due to delimitation, two or three sitting MLAs may not receive tickets this time,” he said.

The BJP’s Central Parliamentary Board is meeting Wednesday evening at 7 PM, and the final candidate list could drop either later that night or by Thursday morning.

Mark Your Calendars

On the other side of the aisle, opposition parties — Congress, Assam Jatiya Parishad, Raijor Dal, AAP, and AIUDF — have already rolled out their candidate lists and hit the campaign trail.

As things stand, here are the key dates to watch:

  • Polling Day: April 9, 2026
  • Results: May 4, 2026

The BJP appears to be banking on a careful mix of seasoned lawmakers and fresh talent to hold on to power. How that balance plays out will become clearer once the official list is out — possibly within the next 24 hours.
