Nagaon: The people of Kaliabor have now gained a modern science centre. The foundation stone of the Kaliabor District Science Centre was laid in 2021, and it was officially inaugurated on Tuesday. The science centre was established with the aim of promoting scientific thinking and awareness among people, especially in rural areas (Kaliabor Science Centre Inauguration).
Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat virtually inaugurated the District Science Centre and the planetarium project at Kaliabor. Nagaon District Commissioner Devashish Sharma was present at the inauguration ceremony.
Speaking at the event, Devashish Sharma said that society must develop with the support of science and technology. He added that efforts should be made to encourage curiosity and an inquisitive mindset among the younger generation.
He further stated that the current education system often does not provide enough opportunities for students to ask questions. He said that if Sir Isaac Newton had not asked why an apple fell to the ground, the concept of gravity might not have been discovered.
In his speech, the District Commissioner also mentioned that many students today focus only on getting a job. Therefore, they mainly study textbooks just to pass examinations and often lack curiosity and scientific thinking.
He added that India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had emphasized the importance of developing a scientific mindset, and the present government is also trying to promote scientific thinking.
He urged students to remain curious and ask questions; otherwise, they would simply memorize textbook lessons like parrots and move forward in life without deeper understanding.
He also stated that progress in the field of science is essential for the development of the nation. Science plays an important role in moving society forward and helping the country gain recognition on the global stage.
On Tuesday, Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat inaugurated the Guwahati Science City project at Sonapur, the largest science centre in Northeast India, and also virtually inaugurated the Kaliabor Science Centre and Planetarium.
