Safiqur Rahman, Nagaon: Golaghat’s Nambor Club etched its name in glory after lifting the Central Assam Zone title of the 8th Assam Premier Club Championship with a spirited five-wicket victory over Star Sporting Club at the iconic Nurul Amin Stadium today (Nambor Club Wins Central Assam Zone Title).
The two-day summit clash unfolded as a gripping contest of nerves and resilience. Star Sporting Club, resuming their second innings at 124 for 8, were bundled out for 136 in 28.5 overs, leaving Nambor Club with a modest yet challenging target of 137. The turning point came through the fiery spell of Pappa Appa Rao, whose four-wicket haul dismantled the opposition’s hopes and shifted the momentum decisively.
Chasing the target under pressure, Nambor displayed remarkable composure. Anchored by a masterclass unbeaten 57 from Sushanta Bharadwaj, the innings gained stability and purpose. Amrit Kumar Singh added a crucial 30 runs, while Rahul Agarwal’s calm unbeaten 19 ensured there were no late hiccups as Nambor reached 138 for 5 in 38.2 overs to seal a memorable win.
Despite a fighting effort from the Star Sporting Club bowlers — with Debajit Baruah claiming three wickets and Shekhar Jyoti Barman taking two — the defending side could not contain Nambor’s determined march to victory.
Rishav Sandikai of Golaghat was adjudged Player of the Final for his outstanding all-round performance, adding further sheen to the club’s celebrations.
The prize distribution ceremony, conducted by Mrinal Kumar Hazarika, Secretary of the Cricket Wing of the Nagaon Sports Association, marked a fitting conclusion to the championship. The coveted trophy was presented to the victorious Nambor Club by Tapan Kumar Das, Secretary of the Nagaon Sports Association, while the runners-up award was handed over to Star Sporting Club by former state cricketer Barun Biswakarma.
With this emphatic triumph, Nambor Club has not only secured the championship crown but has also reaffirmed its emergence as a formidable force in Central Assam’s cricketing arena — a proud and historic moment for Golaghat’s sporting community.
