Ramadan Fruit Prices Surge in Nagaon, Burdening Low-Income Families Fruit Prices Rise in Nagaon Markets as Ramadan Fasting Begins

Nagaon: With the commencement of the month-long Ramadan fast from today, prices of fruits have increased sharply in markets across Nagaon district (Ramadan Fruit Prices Nagaon). The prices of almost all varieties of fruits have gone up by Rs.30 to Rs.80 per kilogram.

Until two days ago, fruits that were being sold at around Rs.150 per kilogram in different parts of Nagaon town and the district are now being sold at least Rs.50–Rs.60 higher per kilogram.

As members of the Muslim community consume fruits in sufficient quantities during Iftar and Sehri in the holy month of Ramadan, fruit prices reportedly rise every year with the beginning of the fasting period. It has been alleged that some traders take advantage of the increased demand and raise prices arbitrarily.

As a result, poor and low-income families are finding it difficult to purchase the necessary fruits for Ramadan despite their willingness.

From today, as Ramadan fasting began, fruit prices have risen significantly in various markets of Nagaon town, including Borbazar, Morigaon Syndicate, Dhing Gate, Mission Market, Natun Bazar, Panigaon Chariali, Rupkonwar Chowk, Morikolong, Dakshinpat Bus Stand, Dimruguri, and other parts of the district. Prices of bananas, apples, grapes, pomegranates, dates, sweet lime, malta, watermelon, oranges and other fruits have increased unusually.

At the well-known fruit market in Borbazar today, apples are being sold at Rs.200–Rs.250 per kilogram, pomegranates at Rs.200–Rs.250 per kilogram, Malbhog bananas at Rs.150 per bunch, Jahaji bananas at Rs.100 per bunch, Amrit Sagar bananas at Rs.120 per bunch, sweet lime at Rs.80 per kilogram, ordinary dates at Rs.100 per kilogram, oranges at Rs.80 per pair, malta at Rs.200 per kilogram, watermelon at Rs.50 per kilogram, pomegranate (bedana) at Rs.200 per kilogram, grapes at Rs.200 per kilogram, and Madras Beguwatali mangoes at Rs.300 per kilogram.

However, just two days ago in the same market, apples were sold at Rs.120 per kilogram, oranges at Rs.30 per pair, watermelon at Rs.50 per kilogram, grapes at Rs120 per kilogram, Malbhog bananas at Rs60 per bunch, ordinary dates at Rs.60 per kilogram, sweet lime at Rs60 per kilogram, pomegranate at Rs140 per kilogram, malta at Rs120 per kilogram, and Amrit Sagar bananas at Rs50 per bunch.

In other markets of the town, fruit prices are Rs20–Rs30 higher compared to Borbazar. In many places, fruits have become almost luxury items for middle- and low-income consumers.

Although fruit traders are alleged to have increased prices arbitrarily citing Ramadan as a reason, there are complaints that the Nagaon district administration has not given adequate attention to the matter.
