India’s Unemployment Rate Rises to 5% in January 2026: Rural Areas Drive IncreaseUnemployment Rate Rises to 5% in January: NSO Survey

National Desk: Fresh data released by India’s National Statistical Office (NSO) has indicated a rise in the country’s unemployment rate at the beginning of the current year (Unemployment Rate India). According to the latest findings, the unemployment rate (UR) increased to 5 percent in January 2026, up from 4.8 percent in December 2025.

The figures are drawn from the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), which is conducted by the NSO. The survey notes a marginal rise in unemployment across both rural and urban areas during January. At the same time, there has been a slight decline in the Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) and the Worker Population Ratio (WPR) in both regions.

Rural Areas Push Overall Increase

As per the official report, the overall increase in unemployment has been driven primarily by a rise in rural unemployment. The report attributes this to factors such as seasonal weather effects, post-harvest slowdown, and reduced enthusiasm in the agricultural sector.

Among persons aged 15 years and above, the unemployment rate reached 5 percent in January 2026, compared to 4.8 percent in December 2025.

  • In rural areas, unemployment rose from 3.9 percent in December 2025 to 4.2 percent in January 2026.
  • In urban areas, the rate increased from 6.7 percent to 7.0 percent during the same period. Gender-wise Trends

For males aged 15 years and above, the unemployment rate in January 2026 remained broadly stable.

However, for females in the same age group, unemployment in January 2026 was higher compared to December 2025. The report states that the female unemployment rate remained within the range observed between April and December 2025. It clarifies that the increase does not indicate long-term structural weakness but may represent a short-term fluctuation.

Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR)

The overall Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) for persons aged 15 years and above stood at 55.9 percent in January 2026, slightly lower than 56.1 percent in December 2025.

  • In rural areas, LFPR declined to 58.7 percent in January 2026 from 59.0 percent in December 2025.
  • In urban areas, LFPR stood at 50.3 percent in January 2026, marginally higher than 50.2 percent in December 2025.

The female LFPR in January was 35.1 percent overall. Of this:

  • 39.7 percent was recorded in rural areas.
  • 25.5 percent was recorded in urban areas.

The survey notes that female LFPR in both rural and urban regions remained largely stable, with only minor fluctuations.

Worker Population Ratio (WPR)

The overall Worker Population Ratio (WPR) for persons aged 15 years and above remained broadly stable in January 2026.

In rural areas:

  • WPR had gradually increased from 53.3 percent in June 2025 to 56.7 percent in December 2025.
  • It then declined slightly to 56.2 percent in January 2026.

For January 2026 in rural areas:

  • Male WPR stood at 75.7 percent (down from 76.0 percent in December).
  • Female WPR stood at 38.0 percent (down from 38.6 percent in December).

In urban areas during January:

  • Male WPR was 70.5 percent.
  • Female WPR was 23.0 percent.
  • Overall WPR stood at 46.8 percent.

These urban figures remained largely stable for both genders.

Survey Coverage and Broader Context

The all-India monthly estimates are based on data collected from 3,73,158 persons.

It is worth noting that since April of the previous year, the central government has been releasing monthly unemployment statistics, along with quarterly reports.

Reacting to the latest rise in unemployment, economic experts have stated that serious gaps in employment opportunities persist across the country. Many educated youth are reportedly unable to secure suitable jobs. While the government has introduced various schemes aimed at expanding employment opportunities, the overall employment landscape has not shown significant change, according to experts.
