Guwahati: Another feather in the cap for Assamese designer Sanjukta Dutta, who has once again brought the pride of Assamese textiles to one of the biggest fashion shows, New York Fashion Week, which began on February 11 and featured collections from top designers around the world (New York Fashion Week).

Amid the global fashion industry gathering, Dutta presented her collection titled “Kuwoli – The Mist” at the New York Fashion Week – Spring/Summer edition. In addition to her contemporary designs, she also showcased the traditional mekhela-chador, drawing appreciation for Assam’s handloom heritage. The presentation was well received.

Dutta was part of a showcase that featured prominent designers such as Coach, Sergio Hudson, and Norma Kamali, and also saw international stars like Anne Hathaway and Gigi Hadid walking the runway. She presented modern designs fused with Assamese handwoven textiles and walked the runway wearing a mekhela-chador, symbolising the cultural roots of her creations.

The fashion show took place in New York on Sunday morning. People travelled from various parts of the world to attend the event. Officials from the Indian Embassy in New York and Indian diplomats were also present at the show, reflecting recognition and appreciation for Indian and Assamese weaving traditions.

The event was also attended by Vishal Jayeshbhai Harsh, Deputy Consul General in New York, who expressed positive remarks about the presentation.

After the show, Sanjukta Dutta said that she would continue working to give Assamese handloom traditions a distinct global identity through her brand. She also stated that she would strive to bring handloom artisans to centre stage in the fashion world as artists, rather than keeping them behind the scenes as mere contributors.

Through her latest appearance at New York Fashion Week, the designer confidently and proudly showcased Assam’s ethnic wear on a global platform.
