Guwahati: The literary world of Assam mourns today as Taren Boro, the former President of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha and a titan of Bodo letters, has passed away. He breathed his last on Saturday, February 14, at a private hospital at the age of 70 (Taren Boro Death News).
Education
Born on November 1, 1955, Boro passed his matriculation examination in 1972. He completed his graduation in 1976 and obtained his postgraduate degree from Gauhati University in 1978. In 1979, he earned a diploma in Journalism from Gauhati University.
Career
During 1978–79, he worked as a temporary announcer in the Bodo section of All India Radio.
He later served as an officer at the Reserve Bank of India in Guwahati and retired from the position.
Literary Works
A distinguished writer and poet, Taren Boro authored more than 14 books, including plays, short stories, novels, and poetry collections. Some of his notable works include Mwdwi (a Bodo play), Biharini Jinga, Easy Money (short stories), Malu Driver, Biharini Jinga–2, Gwrbwni Or, and Mugani Mandar Bibar.
He also published four critical works in Assamese and four translated works. Additionally, he made active contributions as a senior writer to national and regional newspapers.
Acting Career
Taren Boro acted in 12 popular Bodo films. He also appeared in three Assamese films and performed in stage plays and radio dramas broadcast by All India Radio (AIR).
Awards and Responsibilities in Bodo Sahitya Sabha
From 2002 to 2005, he served as the Secretary of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha. He was the Vice-President from 2005 to 2015 and later served as a member of the Advisory Council. From 2017 to 2023, he held the position of President of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha.
Recently, he was selected for a national award in recognition of his contributions to literature and culture. He was also honoured with the Peoples’ Leader Bibhav Deuri Ekata Award and the Mohammad Ibrahim Ali Literary Award.
Chief Minister Expresses Grief
Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed deep sorrow over the demise of Taren Boro. In a condolence message, he stated:
“I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Taren Chandra Boro, the respected former President of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha and Convenor of the Bodo Language Advisory Committee of the Sahitya Academi. The invaluable contributions of this distinguished writer will always be remembered by the Bodo community and the people of Assam. I pray that the soul of Shri Taren Boro, a man of exceptionally calm and simple personality, finds eternal peace, and I extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved family members.”
Assam Jatiya Parishad Expresses Condolences
The Assam Jatiya Parishad has also expressed grief over the death of the eminent writer and former President of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha, Taren Boro. In a statement, Party President Lurinjyoti Gogoi and Secretary Jagadish Bhuyan described his demise as an irreparable loss to Bodo language, literature, and culture.
The statement further mentioned:
“Taren Boro was a silent devotee of Bodo literature. With his powerful pen, farsighted thinking, and strong leadership, he guided society in the right direction. His contributions to the development of the Bodo language, expansion of literary activities, and preservation of cultural heritage will remain unforgettable. He played a significant role in inspiring the younger generation toward literature and social thought. His passing has deeply saddened not only the Bodo literary world but the entire people of Assam. In this difficult time, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, relatives, and admirers.”
