Guwahati: Assam’s political landscape is currently witnessing a highly dramatic situation (Assam Political Twist). On one hand, there are serious allegations linked to national security against an opposition leader, and on the other, the government has tightened official security arrangements for the same leader — a development that has created widespread sensation across the state. Just two days after Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed a press conference regarding allegations of Pakistan links involving APCC President Gaurav Gogoi, the decision to provide Gogoi with security personnel along with an escort vehicle has taken on special significance.
Demand for Security and Exposure of an ‘Attack Conspiracy’
The chain of events began last Sunday when the Chief Minister made public the report of the SIT formed against MP Gaurav Gogoi. Stating that the scope of Assam Police’s investigation was limited, the Chief Minister announced that the entire matter would be forwarded to the Union Home Ministry for further probe.
In response, on Monday, Gaurav Gogoi described the Chief Minister’s press conference as a “super flop show” and questioned why the government had kept silent for six months on such a sensitive matter related to national security. Gogoi clarified that his wife’s visit to Pakistan was linked to her international climate change work. Most importantly, during that press conference, Gogoi raised concerns about his lack of security. He alleged that unlike other former presidents, he had not been provided security cover, which, he said, often prevents him from stepping out in the evenings. He stated, “Many people advise me not to go out in the evenings. Since there are no police personnel with me, they request youth Congress members to accompany me. Perhaps the Chief Minister is trying to create a situation within Assam. But we are not afraid.”
Within 24 hours of this allegation, on Tuesday, the state government provided Gaurav Gogoi with a special vehicle and three security personnel. Regarding this sudden move, the Chief Minister revealed what he described as explosive information. According to him, Guwahati Police received a specific complaint on Monday alleging that there was a conspiracy brewing within sections of the Congress to stage a “mock assault” on Gaurav Gogoi in order to gain public sympathy.
The Chief Minister said, “Congress has brought in a group called ‘Inclusive Mind.’ They plan, Congress executes. One among them lodged the complaint. The complainant stated that such a plan was underway. As an Assamese, I feel deeply troubled.” One person has already been detained in connection with the alleged conspiracy, and detailed information is expected to emerge after 4–5 days of investigation.
An unusual coincidence has drawn attention — the very day Gaurav Gogoi raised concerns about his lack of security and criticized the government, the next day an alleged conspiracy to attack him was revealed. This sequence of events has raised several questions in the public mind. On one side, some leaders and workers of the ruling party have labeled Gogoi a “Pakistan agent” and demanded his arrest, while on the other side, the government has ensured his security with an escort vehicle. This mysterious turn in state politics has triggered mixed reactions across Assam.
