Korean Gaming Addiction

Preliminary investigation has revealed that the three sisters were excessively addicted to an online task-based game. According to the police:

Attraction toward Korea: The girls reportedly did not consider themselves Indian but believed they were Korean. They addressed each other by Korean names and imagined themselves as Korean princesses.

Eight-page diary note: Police recovered a diary from the spot containing handwritten notes along with a crying face emoji (caricature)and the words “Sorry Papa.” The diary reportedly mentioned that they could not leave Korea, which they described as their life.

Restriction on mobile phone use: Family members had recently restricted their excessive mobile phone usage, following which the girls were under mental stress, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Nimish Patil said.

Disruption in Education and Isolation

The sisters reportedly became addicted to online gaming during the Covid-19 pandemic. The addiction was so severe that they had not attended school for the past two to three years. It is learnt that the eldest sister, aged 16, was studying in Class 4. According to their father, Chetan Kumar, the girls mostly stayed confined to a single room and did everything together, from eating to other daily activities.

“I thought they were just playing ordinary games. I never imagined it would lead to such a horrifying outcome,” the grief-stricken father told the media.

Police have seized the sisters’ mobile phones and sent them for forensic examination. Investigators are currently probing how many hidden tasks were involved in the game and whether the girls were provoked or influenced toward taking the extreme step. The investigation is ongoing.
