Guwahati: Speaking in Guwahati, Dr. Sarma emphasized his administration’s stance on electoral demographics (SIR Assam voter list). “We have already made arrangements so that Miyas cannot vote in Assam, but this is only the preliminary stage,” the Chief Minister said. “Once the SIR is implemented, we will need to cut 4 to 5 lakh Miya votes (SIR NRC Assam).”
He remained indifferent to opposition backlash, stating:
”Congress can abuse me as much as they want. My job is to make things difficult for the Miya community. If they don’t face these hardships, they will move into areas like Duliajan and Tinsukia. Recently in Tinsukia, I observed that Hindus are selling land while Miyas are the primary buyers (Miya voters Assam). This means they have already reached Digboi, Tinsukia, and Duliajan. If we don’t become cautious now, when will we? The SIR has caused no hardship to the ethnic Assamese people (Himanta Biswa Sarma statement).”
Criticism of Rahul Gandhi’s Actions
The Chief Minister expressed strong disapproval of Rahul Gandhi’s conduct during the Republic Day celebrations at Rashtrapati Bhavan. He pointed out that while the Prime Minister had arranged for guests—including those from Europe—to be presented with traditional Assamese Angabastra (honorary scarves), Rahul Gandhi reportedly declined to wear them (Assam political news).
Dr. Sarma noted that Gandhi refused both the Gamocha and other traditional attire, an act he claimed saddened the people of Assam.
He highlighted that despite being from Gujarat, Prime Minister Modi frequently promotes the Gamosa globally.
The Chief Minister remarked that this was not the first time Gandhi had insulted Assamese symbols and predicted that the public would “teach him a lesson” in the future.
Remarks on Gaurav Gogoi’s Absence
When questioned by journalists regarding APCC President Gaurav Gogoi’s absence from the flag-unfurling ceremony at Rajiv Bhawan on January 26, the Chief Minister delivered a personal critique.
He claimed that Gogoi is never present in Assam on Republic Day or Independence Day. “Three members of his own household are foreigners,” Dr. Sarma remarked. “How can he be a ‘Swadeshi’ (patriot)? If he weren’t in politics, he would have likely been identified as a foreigner by now as well.”
