Kokrajhar: In the wake of violent clashes that erupted in Kokrajhar on Tuesday, Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Chief Executive Member Hagrama Mohilary issued a strong statement condemning the Kokrajhar unrest. He pointed to the involvement of “third-party elements” allegedly attempting to incite political turmoil for personal gain.
The incident, which involved stone-pelting at police personnel, lathi-charge, tear gas shelling, and blank firing to disperse protestors, left several people injured. As a precautionary measure, the administration suspended internet services in Kokrajhar and Chirang districts. Earlier, protestors had blocked National Highway 27, escalating tensions. The Inspector General of Police (IGP) of BTR appealed to the public to maintain calm and refrain from obstructing public roads.
Reacting to the developments, Mohilary described the incident as “unfortunate” and rooted in misunderstanding. “Some third-party forces have infiltrated the situation with the intent of reaping political benefits by creating chaos. We will never allow such forces to succeed,” he stated firmly. He expressed confidence that the administration would resolve the issue swiftly and restore normalcy.
Speaking at a foundation stone-laying ceremony for a new educational institution in Rajdhakmal, Salbari (Baksa district), Mohilary made a heartfelt appeal for unity and peace among all communities in the Bodoland region. “We are all residents of BTC—Adivasis, Bodos, everyone. We must live here together till our last breath. Let no political party or individual provoke us into unrest. Peace is our shared responsibility,” he said.
Reiterating his concern, Mohilary again alleged that the incident was triggered by external interference. “It is because of the intrusion of third-party actors that such an incident could take place. However, I am confident that the administration will soon bring the situation under control,” he added.
While Mohilary has hinted at the involvement of outside forces, the exact nature and identity of these elements remain unclear. As investigations continue, the region watches closely, hoping for a swift return to peace and clarity on the forces at play behind the unrest.
