Guwahati : In a heartfelt homecoming that blended nostalgia with a vision for the future, nearly a hundred Assamese professionals living abroad gathered at the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary this Sunday. The group, residing in over 20 countries across the globe, visited the sanctuary as part of the First World Assamese Convention 2026 (Assamese Diaspora).
The morning began early at the Tamulidoba area of the sanctuary, where the delegates were greeted by the sight of thousands of migratory birds and Pobitora’s famous one-horned rhinoceroses. For many in the group, which included over 80 professionals working in fields ranging from medicine to technology, the visit was a reminder of the raw, aesthetic beauty that Assam offers the world.
The visit wasn’t just about sightseeing, however. At the nearby Mystic Mayong, the group held a focused session titled “Bird Diversity and the Potential of Bird Tourism in Assam.” This falls under the “Wings of Assam” banner—an initiative spearheaded by the diaspora to turn the state’s avian diversity into a global tourism draw.
Dr. Jayanta Biswa Sarma, traveling from the US, and Dr. Jagannath Biswakarma, from the UK, led the delegation under the Global Assamese Foundation. Their goal is simple: to take the “emotions and expertise” of the diaspora and channel them back into the state’s development.
During the session, Morigaon District Commissioner Anamika Tewari joined the delegates to offer her support. She spoke warmly to the group, noting that the international reach of the Assamese community is one of the state’s greatest untapped resources for promoting tourism on the global stage.
The day concluded with a deep dive into local history. Around 50 of the official delegates spent the afternoon at the Mayong Village Museum, where they explored the region’s legendary past. As the sun set over the sanctuary, the consensus among the visitors was clear: Assam’s nature and culture are ready for the world stage—they just need a global voice to champion them.
