Anamika Tewari Completes One Year in Morigaon with Focus on Healthcare, Education and DevelopmentOne Year of Anamika Tewari in Morigaon: Healthcare, Education, Women’s Welfare and Development Initiatives

News Desk: Anamika Tewari, District Commissioner of Morigaon, has wrapped up her first year in the role. She assumed office as District Commissioner of Morigaon on June 20, 2025 (Anamika Tewari Morigaon).

Over the past year, the senior administrative officer has played a significant role in the district’s overall development through her capable leadership, visionary planning, commitment to public welfare and innovative approach. Since taking charge, she has worked to address people’s issues directly rather than limiting herself to routine administrative duties, and has pushed forward several development initiatives across the district.

One of the more visible changes during her tenure has been the revival of the ICU at Morigaon Civil Hospital, which had remained non-functional for a long time. With the unit back in operation, patients with serious conditions can now receive treatment within the district itself, significantly reducing the need for referrals to facilities elsewhere.

On the health front, she has also focused on maternal and child health programmes, vaccination drives, nutrition and public health awareness campaigns. Officials say these efforts have strengthened healthcare services and improved awareness among residents.

On the environmental side, around 500 nahor saplings were planted along the banks of the historically significant Charan Beel in Morigaon. The move is aimed at restoring ecological balance in the area while also enhancing the natural beauty of the wetland and contributing to a greener and healthier environment for future generations.

Morigaon is no stranger to floods and erosion, and the implementation of the Geo Bag scheme has been a priority during her tenure. Tewari is said to have maintained strict monitoring of the project — particularly in vulnerable areas including Laharighat — to prevent irregularities or negligence in its execution.

Her handling of disaster management has also drawn positive attention.

The district’s annual District Day celebration under her watch centred on women’s empowerment, with a commemorative publication bringing together contributions from academics, writers, public figures and conscious citizens on the subject of women’s rights, dignity and empowerment. The initiative also helped spread a positive message of women’s empowerment throughout society.

The Nijut Moina scheme — aimed at benefiting girl students and women — has been actively implemented under her leadership. The programme has benefited many students and women and has contributed to their socio-economic development and self-reliance. Women’s self-help groups and the Arunodoi scheme have also seen continued focus during her tenure.

In terms of tourism, a new picnic spot was identified and developed at Kathoni Char in Laharighat. Local youth are expected to benefit from the income-generation opportunities this could create.

Perhaps one of her more unusual initiatives in education was the holding of educational gram sabhas — village-level meetings focused on schooling issues — across the district. Morigaon is the only district in Assam to have implemented this innovative programme. Topics covered included school dropout rates, quality of education, and the role of parents. The initiative has also helped spark a broader public movement aimed at improving education.

Welfare of the tea tribe community has also been on her agenda, with steps taken for the health, education and social development of children and women at Gopal Krishna Tea Garden.

On the industrial front, Tewari has been actively involved in coordinating with domestic and foreign delegations connected to a semiconductor project proposed for Jagiroad. She has also demonstrated administrative efficiency in coordinating visits, inspections and project-related management. If realised, the project is expected to make Morigaon one of Assam’s key industrial locations.

Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the district multiple times during her tenure, with the trips involving reviews of ongoing projects and announcements of new schemes, further accelerating Morigaon’s development journey.

Her approach — regular public contact, prompt attention to grievances, a push for digital services, transparent administration and open communication with staff — has been noted as building a more productive working environment within the district administration.

Under her leadership, the district administration has worked collectively to achieve progress across multiple sectors. Special emphasis has been placed on the welfare of persons with disabilities, encouraging education among children from poor and disadvantaged families, improving the food and civil supplies system, and strengthening transportation and basic infrastructure across the district.

During the year, Tewari also received wider recognition through a survey conducted by Fame India magazine. In a nationwide assessment covering nearly 800 districts, she was included among India’s Top 100 District Magistrates, bringing pride to the people of Morigaon.

Taken together, her first year as District Commissioner of Morigaon has been marked by action across sectors — healthcare, education, environment, women’s welfare, industry, disaster management and public service delivery. Overall, her tenure has emerged as a notable chapter of development, innovation, transparency, public welfare and good governance in the district.
